Facebook User Group Chennai Meetup on 25th January 2014
Playing With Graph API, Google App Script And Privacy Settings
This is our third Facebook event and we had such an awesome time organizing it! I think Vignesh and me have really grown as organizers over the past few months. This was by far our most perfect event yet!
The event was called “Playing with Graph API, Google App Script and Privacy Settings”. Last event was a Developer only event, but we thought it would make sense to have a User oriented event also. I think that worked out for us since we got to have more of a conversation with the crowd rather then them just listening to us!
This time around, we collaborated with the big guys from Google Developers Group, Chennai. It was so much fun working with them! Thanks guys 🙂 But the part we are totally psyched about is the GitHub sponsorship! You guys are awesome!! Our first sponsors!!

The event was held at First Planet, at the office of Open Source Foundation. We had a chance to meet the CEO, Mr.Kumaran. His plans for the future of his company and Chennai were truly inspirational. We had a nice chat over Green Tea, where he walked us through the lifestyle of his employees – and lemme tell you, it’s NOT your typical Chennai company.
The event started out with Swaathi talking about previous FBUG events, introducing the organizers and of course GitHub. We’re really happy to say that this event had a lot of developers attending it. So I think we made complete sense to them! She then moved on to give an overview of Graph API and how Facebook structures its data. After that came a little intro on Google Drive and App Script. She then put the two together. Fetch data from Facebook and add it on to a spreadsheet. The FBUG team worked on a small custom script to pull data from Facebook groups and update their ‘likes’, ‘about’ and ‘cover picture’ on to the spreadsheet.
The next talk was by GDG Organizer, Jeyanthan. He showed the crowd what Version Control is all about. He then moved on to Git and finally GitHub. It was obvious he really got into it when he picked up a marker pen and schooled everyone there! 😛 We had a few GitHub giveaways to give away after that. I think the stickers were a HUGE hit. They couldn’t get enough of them! But the part that really got the crowds attention was the GitHub Glides video. That was super fun!
Finally, FBUG organizer, Vignesh told us about Facebook Privacy Settings and how to protect ourselves from the weirdos on the Net.
I think this was probably the most important part of the event. People don’t realize that what you put online has the potential to hurt you someday.
